Sonatina for flute and piano was dedicated to Judy Hand, Gates' colleague for many years at McNeese State University. His collaboration with her was so strong that the Sonata for flute and piano is inscribed "another one for Judy". The Sonatina was a winner in the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition.
